Blockbuster
Blockbuster is a card game where players are competing film-makers. It has a mix of strategy and creativity : actor and scene cards reward you with points when used, but the actors and scenes used determine the base structure of the scenario players have to tell each other at the end of the game.
The winner is the one who manages to accumulate points while getting the most upvotes from other players with his scenario.
On this project I worked on defining the rules and designing the cards : the main challenge was to balance the importance of the strategy and the creativity parts.
What went right
What went wrong
What I learned
We did not fear to make drastic changes to the game during design iterations, which allowed us to avoid big mistakes and learn a lot. We also managed to find a right balance between strategy and creativity.
Blockbuster was the first project I worked on with a group ; moreover we were four game designers, and we only took design decisions with the agreement of the whole team.
Because of this, we took far too much time discussing and trying to get everyone to agree on every design decision.
Being my first team project, I learned a lot, but the most important things are :
- being capable of justifying design decisions to a team
- understanding that making a game is about having intentions, which translate into an experience, and as such, all design decisions are made to nurture this experience.
